Chubby Chandler Denies Rumor of Rory McIlroy’s LIV Golf Move

In a recent development, Chubby Chandler, the former agent of renowned golfer Rory McIlroy, has firmly denied being the source of a rumor suggesting that McIlroy was considering joining LIV Golf for an astronomical sum.

Earlier reports from City AM claimed that McIlroy, a four-time major champion, was offered a staggering $850 million upfront fee along with a 2% equity stake in the LIV Golf tour to make the switch. These rumors sparked significant controversy, given McIlroy’s vocal stance against the breakaway tour in the past.

However, Chandler, who managed McIlroy until their split in 2011 under acrimonious circumstances, refuted any involvement in spreading this speculation. He addressed the situation in an interview, emphasizing, “It never came from me.”

McIlroy, typically reserved when it comes to addressing rumors, took a rare step in publicly denying any discussions with LIV Golf. “My future is here on the PGA Tour, and it’s never been any different. I will play on the PGA Tour for the rest of my career,” he stated emphatically.

The Northern Irishman has publicly softened his stance towards players who joined LIV Golf, acknowledging that individuals make decisions based on what they believe is best for themselves. Despite this softened stance, McIlroy reaffirmed his commitment to the PGA Tour, dismissing any notions of switching allegiances.

Some speculated Chandler might have been the instigator of the rumor, partly due to their contentious history. McIlroy had previously accused Chandler of leading him down the wrong path, which contributed to their professional split. Despite these past tensions, Chandler reiterated that he had no part in the recent speculation and supported McIlroy’s autonomy in making career decisions.

“If Rory was hoping to bring the game together, in a funny sort of way, if he signed for LIV, it would make everybody come together. But he would do it the wrong way round. At the end of the day, if Rory is amongst this lot, then you’ve almost got what you want,” Chandler noted, while reinforcing that McIlroy has always been his own man since he was 17 years old.

The golfing world continues to buzz with this latest turn of events, but one thing remains clear: Rory McIlroy’s loyalty to the PGA Tour is unwavering, and any suggestions otherwise are unfounded according to both McIlroy and Chandler.
