Golf champion Rory McIlroy initiated divorce proceedings from his wife, Erica, following seven years of matrimony, as per court records in Florida on Monday.
TMZ Sports first reported on the divorce filing.
His communication team confirmed Tuesday to the Irish Independent that he had filed for divorce in a Florida court from his wife of seven years.
McIlroy’s statement “stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment,” per the outlet.
McIlroy has a 3-year-old daughter Poppy with Stoll.
The cause of the divorce remains undisclosed at this time. Fox News Digital has contacted McIlroy’s attorney for additional information.
Rory and Erica began their relationship in 2015, following the end of the engagement between Rory, a PGA Tour star, and Caroline Wozniacki, a tennis star, in May 2014. Later that year, Rory and Erica got engaged and tied the knot in April 2017. They are now proud parents of a child.
Erica McIlroy, a previous PGA of America staff member, accompanied him to various tournaments, notably the Ryder Cup last year.
Fresh from a victory at the Wells Fargo Championship, the Northern Irishman is gaining momentum as he gears up for the upcoming PGA Championship this weekend. In April, he clinched the Zurch Classic alongside Shane Lowry in a thrilling playoff.
He boasts 26 wins on the PGA Tour, clinching two in 2024. His triumphs include four major victories, the most recent being the 2014 PGA Championship, where he secured two of those titles.
McIlroy finds himself entangled in the PGA Tour’s dispute with LIV Golf. He stepped down from the PGA Tour board in November while officials endeavored to finalize a merger agreement.
