Rory McIlroy says THE PLAYERS Championship will be ‘game-time decision’ after testing back injury

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Rory McIlroy described himself as a “game-time decision” for the opening round of THE PLAYERS Championship on Wednesday as he continues to manage a back injury that forced him out of last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard.

McIlroy Returns to TPC Sawgrass for First Practice Session

McIlroy arrived at TPC Sawgrass for the first time all week on Wednesday afternoon, having delayed his travel from South Florida while receiving ongoing treatment. He hit balls intermittently for about an hour, working his way from a wedge up to a 6-iron. After speaking to the media, McIlroy walked the back nine with a wedge and putter to further test his body.

Notably, McIlroy has not yet attempted to hit a driver – a crucial test that will likely determine whether he can compete at full capacity this week.

How the Injury Happened

McIlroy felt a twinge in his back while warming up for the third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill last Saturday. The issue quickly devolved into muscle spasms once he began hitting balls, making it impossible for him to continue. He withdrew ahead of his Saturday tee time while tied for ninth at 4-under par.

It was only the second mid-tournament withdrawal of McIlroy’s career. His previous withdrawal came at the 2013 Honda Classic (now the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches) due to wisdom tooth pain – making this his first injury-related withdrawal in over a decade of professional golf.

Recovery and Treatment

After withdrawing, McIlroy drove straight from Orlando to his physiotherapist in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he has had daily treatment sessions ever since. He described his current condition as more of a sensitivity than outright pain, noting that the muscles around the injury site tend to fatigue quickly when put under stress.

McIlroy expressed cautious optimism about his progress, saying the improvement from Saturday to Wednesday had been significant. He indicated that medication was helping with recovery and that all signs were pointing in the right direction heading into Thursday.

What’s at Stake This Week

McIlroy is the defending champion at THE PLAYERS, having won the 2025 edition in a dramatic Monday-finish playoff against J.J. Spaun. A victory this week would carry enormous historical significance.

If McIlroy wins, he would become just the second golfer in the tournament’s 50-plus-year history to claim back-to-back titles, joining Scottie Scheffler, who achieved the feat in 2023 and 2024. A win would also give McIlroy his third PLAYERS Championship title (following his 2019 and 2025 victories), matching Jack Nicklaus for the most in tournament history. Nicklaus won the event in 1974, 1976, and 1978.

Thursday Tee Time and Grouping

McIlroy is scheduled to tee off at 1:42 p.m. ET on Thursday in a marquee grouping alongside Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama. He will test his body once more Thursday morning before making a final decision on whether to play.

McIlroy has competed in every edition of THE PLAYERS Championship since 2012, and he noted that his deep familiarity with TPC Sawgrass means he does not need extensive preparation time to be competitive on the course.
