Arian Otaegui started the day five shots behind second-round leader Sebastian Söderberg and closed with a flawless 65 to win the shortened Volvo China Open by one shot at 18-under.

“I’m very, very happy, I’m extremely happy,” said the Spaniard. “I had to wait a little bit since I finished, see what was happening in the final group but luckily for me, things turned up well and I’m extremely happy.

“I was starting five shots back and I tried not to look at the leaderboard, not think about the result, try to play how I played on Thursday and Friday and think if things go well, it’s a course where I can have some birdie chances.

“I have been putting well, I was feeling more and more confident through the week with the putter and I knew if I had birdie chances that I could potentially hole a few. I think I was actually feeling more calm through the round.”

Italy’s Guido Migliozzi made a single bogey at the par-5 17th and closed with a 67 placing him in second place at 17-under.

Sweden’s Söderberg who had led after the first and second round hit his opening tee-shot into the penalty area for a bogey and made his first birdie at the 9th. Three more birdies followed on the back nine but so did a bogey and a double bogey at the par-4 18th for a 72 leaving him with a share of third place at 16-under.

England’s Paul Waring (69) and Switzerland’s Joel Girrbach (67) also finished third.
